Who is Mr. Davarum...

So whats so fantastic about the picture of the ship on the left... Well well - 149 years ago, this was the very ship which carried our ancestors to South Africa. Yes peeps- this is the SS TRURO!

Not exactly what we imagined huh?

Well here are some other interesting facts as we commemorate our arrival:

Between 1860 and 1911 some 140 000 Indians arrived in South Africa as indentured laborers. The majority of them were Hindus from Madras, Travancore, Orissa and Bengal. Today, there are almost a million Indians living in South Africa - the largest group outside of India and Pakistan

The first ship to arrive in South Africa (with Indians) was the SS TRURO. There were 348 laborers onboard. They were categorised as 2 % Brahmins, 9 % Kshatriyas, 21 % Vaishyas and 31 % Sudras, 27% Scheduled Castes, 3 % Christians and 4 % Muslims.

The first Indians who came to South Africa did not work only on the sugar cane plantations; they also worked on the railways, dockyards, municipal services, the coalmines of Northern Natal and in domestic service.

The name of the first immigrant, recorded on the list of the ship Truro, was Davarum.

The first major temple erected in South Africa was in 1899. It was a Ganesha Temple at Mount Edgecombe in Durban and was built by an indentured laborer from India known as Kistappa Reddy.

Well now you know....

My guest on the show yesterday, Mr. Aziz Hassim summed up the journey of the last 149 years and pointed out that your religion is not your origin - especially for those who think that there is or there should be a north and south battle!!!

Bob Marley and the Wailers are wailing away since last weekend when Ras Dumisani rendered his version of the South African National Anthem... Out of tune and clueless about the words, his mockery of the sacred anthem could very well result in a charge of treason! Where are the individual/s who appointed him to sing? Should they not also be questioned/ charged?

Somebody say one ou tripple one (10111), shorty call for pizza... The emergency services number has been out of service recently... Luckily its not a number which many victims of crime use - All South Africans know that when you call the number, irrespective of how many bullet wounds you have endured- they will just put a hold on it, put a hold it!!!

The weather has been running havoc these past couple of days and I pity those GP drivers who are now travelling even longer during mornings and afternoons!!! There was snow on the berg and people are wondering whether Summer 2009 has been affected by the Dept of Correctional Serivces! Hmmmmm seems like there will have to be a special inquiry set up with another team of overpaid analysts who will tell us what we already know! Thereafter, nobody will be fired and the results will be swept under the carpet or in some cases the grass mat!!! Thats if the grass from the mat has not already been smoked...

Superb punjabi mix on the show tonight - MC Dark is going to be making an appearance before it actually gets dark... Enjoy!

Peace

PS: This is the Bachchan's latest offering-PAA- Will be playing this soundtrack on the show this afternoon... And yeah - that is the BIG B on the Abhishek's back...

Sometimes Sometimes

There is a very special guest on the show this afternoon - A man with many stories to tell and I hope you are going to join us when we delve into at least half of the past 149 years for LIVE COVERAGE!!!! :)

Aziz Hassim joins me and we are dedicating this fantastic song just to him - If you want to know why, have a look at the translation of the song....

Maein Har Ek Pal Ka Shaayar Hoon Lyrics

Maein Har Ek Pal Ka Shaayar Hoon...
i'm the poet of every moment
Har Ek Pal Meri Kahani Hai
every moment is my story
Har Ek Pal Meri Hasti Hai
every moment is my status
Har Ek Pal Meri Jawaani Hai
every moment is my youth
Rishton Ka Roop Badalta Hai, Buniyaden Khatam Nahin Hoti
the face of realtionship changes, but foundations remain the same.

Khwabon Ki Aur Umango Ki, Miyaden Khatam Nahin Hoti
the boundaries of dreams and joys never end
Ek Phool Mein Tera Roop Basa Ek Phool Mein Meri Jawaani Hai
one flower has your face and another has my youth
Ek Chehra Teri Nishaani Hai, Ek Chehra Meri Nishaani Hai
one face is symbol of yours, one face is symbol of mine

Main Har Ek Pal Ka Shaayar Hoon...
i'm the poet of every moment
Tujhko Mujhko Jeevan Amrit, Ab In Haathon Se Peena Hai
you and me have to drink the life ambrosia with these hands
Inki Dhadkan Mein Basna Hai, Inki Saanson Mein Jeena Hai
we have to live in their heartbeats, we have to live in their breath
Tu Apni Adaen Baksh Inhen Maein Apni Wafaen Deta Hoon
you give them your grace,i'm giving them my trust
Jo Apne Liye Sochi Thi Kabhi, Woh Saari Duaen Deta Hoon
whatever i had thought for me before, i'm giving all those prayers
Maein Har Ek Pal Ka Shaayar Hoon...
i'm the poet of every moment

Peace!

Thanx Shushie

Hey peeps, this was the mail I read out on the show on Tues...

From: Shushie Govender1 [mailto:shushie.govender]Sent: Tue 11/17/2009 2:38 PMTo: undisclosed-recipientsSubject: FW: Happy Anniversary .....Charou !!

I am PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN INDIAN!!!! Are you?

Happy 149th anniversary to all the charou's...

On this day in 1860, we took our first steps on South African soil.

We actually arrived on the 15th November but we were quarantined until we were unleashed upon South Africa on the 17thNovember 1860.

Little did they know that the small population that they brought to SA would have such a huge impact on this country, from Pravin Gordhan to Monty Naicker, from Mac Maharaj to Jay Naidoo, from Kas Naidoo to Papwa Sewgolum, from Mahathma Gandhi to Ahmad Kathrada and yes even Darren Rajbal and Schabir Schaik, we have added spice to the Rainbow Nation.

Walk with pride today! Just think next year we turn 150.

Proudly South African- Indian

Mid Month Moods

Its already Mid Nov 09 and we are still awaiting the South African Summer!!! Pity, I think the recession hit us harder than we thought... It's even affected the seasons!!!
None- the-less, this cold, wet weather seems perfect to use a cheesy pick up line such as this one (ref pic) if you're hoping to pick something or someone online!!!

Another week ahead and much to be done... Lots happening on the show, with some cooler giveaways... There is plenty of new GOOD music out and you will be hearing it in the afternoons... well provided we steer off the road - I mean off the play list every now and then! Tired of sounding like that other station- Home of the Repeats!

December is starting to look good... There is a huge gig happening on the 4th which I will tell you about and then there is the Golf on the 5th!!! Lots going on...

Expect some cool downloads this week and also, let me know your thoughts on a weekly Top 10 (ON DA ROAD STYLE) here on the blog!

Peace...
